I've made stropping compound from equal parts paste wax, light oil, and kitchen abrasive powder (Barkeeper's Friend, Ajax, Comet, BonAmi, etc.) I'm sure it's not very good compared to chromium oxide or diamond spray, but it works when it's all you have.
